Dessert for Breakfast Isn’t Always a Bad Thing! | Maple Yogurt with Berry Compote | One Cook, Two Books

Note: the events discussed in this post occurred Sunday, July 23. Being a stressed out college student, I’ve been wrapped up in school work and have not been able to post to my blog until today. My apologies!


Brunch: The best meal of the day, in my opinion. I feel like it’s a cheat for anything. You can have something sweet, or you can have something savory. You can have something big, or you can have something small. You can have something like tea or coffee, or… you can have alcohol.


Who doesn’t like brunch? I don’t think I’ve met someone who doesn’t!


The Tritchonis Clan and I decided that every Sunday for the summer I would host brunch for the family. This Sunday was just like all the others, but I decided that I should use a recipe from Mina Stone’s book… should I not?


I went straight to the dessert section because, well, desserts man… Desserts are delicious. Not only that, but it turns out that one of her desserts is actually very similar to that of a breakfast item!


Maple Yogurt with Berry Compote


Aka, yogurt parfaits!


I was really excited to make this one because it seemed so incredibly easy. Basically all that had to get done was boil down some fruit (I chose strawberries and blueberries) into syrupy goodness, and add some maple syrup to yogurt. Well, about 20 minutes later I was completely done and brunch was ready!

The meal was actually quite perfect. The yogurt was just lightly sweetened from the maple syrup, but the tartness of the greek yogurt was still able to come through. The berries were sweet where they were liquidy, and still tart where the fruit still held structure. And the colour? I mean really! Look at that amazing “violet”/”magenta”/”someone needs to tell me what colour this is because I love it.”

So that was our simple brunch. It was absolutely delicious, and I had leftover berry compote that I have been using quite often! In fact… I’m going to be making some pancakes tomorrow morning for breakfast. Maybe instead of maple syrup I’ll use up more of that compote!
